In January 1998, a German businessman was sentenced to death by stoning after hugging and kissing his fiancee at the Mehrabad airport in Tehran. Under Iranian law, any sexual activity outside of marriage between a Muslim woman and non-Muslim man is classed as adultery and punishable by death. Although the Supreme Court eventually overturned the mans death sentence, his fiancee went to prison for four months and was whipped 99 times.
